What Vape Should I Buy: Pod, Pen, or DTL Device?

Author: Marsilen October 9, 2026 ~ 11 min read
Pod, pen and DTL vape device formats side by side
Pod, pen and DTL formats vary in size and airflow.

Choose a pod if you want a small vape with simple controls. Choose a vape pen if you prefer a slim body with a pod or tank. Choose a DTL device if you want an open draw and more vapor.

The name on the box can be misleading. A pod or pen describes the hardware. MTL, RDL and DTL describe how you inhale. Some pods support more than one draw style.

So start with the draw. Then check the coil, airflow, power, battery and liquid system.

Vaping is not risk-free. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive. Adults who do not currently use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarettes.[1]

Pod vs Pen vs DTL

If you want… Start with… Check before buying
A small device with few controls Pod Pod type, coil options, battery

A slim cylindrical body Vape pen Coil, power and draw style
An open inhale and more vapor DTL device Power, battery and liquid use
No manual refilling Prefilled rechargeable device Replacement system and market version
Control over your e-liquid Refillable pod or tank Compatible pods, coils and liquid

Not sure which draw fits you?

Send Marsilen the draw you want, your destination market and the type of device you are comparing. That is enough to narrow the options by actual coil, airflow and battery specifications.

MTL, RDL or DTL?

MTL: Tight Draw, Less Vapor

MTL means mouth-to-lung. You draw the aerosol into your mouth first, then inhale.

The airflow is tighter. Vapor output is usually lower than with a high-output DTL setup.

MTL suits people who want a smaller device, a restricted draw and less fuss during the day. The inhale can also feel more familiar to an adult smoker who is used to a cigarette-style draw.

RDL: Between MTL and DTL

RDL means restricted direct-to-lung. You inhale directly, but the airflow still has some resistance.

Choose RDL if MTL feels too tight but a wide-open DTL draw feels like too much.

Do not decide from coil resistance alone. Airflow, coil design and operating power can make two cartridges with similar resistance feel very different.

DTL: Open Draw, More Vapor

DTL means direct-to-lung. You inhale directly through a more open airflow path.

Higher-output DTL setups generally use more battery energy and e-liquid per puff than low-power MTL devices.

The Deimos shows why these categories overlap. Its published specification lists MTL and DTL operation, a 0.4Ω mesh coil, a 1200mAh rechargeable battery and Type-C charging.

The Mars Super DTL takes a different approach. It lists 21W Smooth mode, 42W Boost mode, adjustable airflow and a 1200mAh battery.

Boost doubles the stated wattage from 21W to 42W. The battery capacity remains 1200mAh. That does not mean vapor, nicotine delivery or battery life also double.

What a Pod Gives You

A pod keeps the liquid chamber and coil system inside a removable cartridge.

Some pods use a built-in coil. When the coil wears out, you replace the whole cartridge. Other systems let you keep the pod and change only the coil.

Before buying, check:

  • prefilled or refillable pod;
  • built-in or replaceable coil;
  • compatible cartridge options;
  • airflow adjustment;
  • battery capacity;
  • maximum output;
  • replacement-pod availability.

The MARS NEXUS PRO lists a 2mL refillable pod, 0.4Ω, 0.6Ω and 0.8Ω cartridge options, an 800mAh battery and up to 30W output.

Multiple compatible cartridges let you change coil resistance without replacing the battery device.

What a Vape Pen Gives You

A vape pen is mostly a shape: a slim battery with a pod or tank above it.

One pen can be MTL. Another can be RDL or DTL. The body shape does not tell you how it vapes.

Compare these instead:

  • coil or cartridge;
  • recommended power;
  • airflow;
  • battery capacity;
  • tank or pod design.

Two pens can look almost identical and still give a completely different draw.

Do Not Buy by Maximum Wattage

The coil’s rated range matters more than the device’s maximum wattage.

A 100W device gives you no extra benefit if the cartridge you actually use is designed to run far below 100W.

Use the manufacturer’s range for the exact coil or cartridge. Do not pick wattage from a generic resistance chart.

Resistance Does Not Define the Draw

A 0.4Ω coil is not automatically DTL.

Deimos uses a 0.4Ω mesh coil while supporting both MTL and DTL. MARS NEXUS PRO lists 0.4Ω, 0.6Ω and 0.8Ω cartridges on one platform.

If two products show the same resistance, check:

  • recommended power;
  • airflow;
  • coil construction;
  • mouthpiece design;
  • the draw style stated for that cartridge.

Battery mAh Is Not Battery Life

A battery’s mAh rating tells you capacity, not how many hours or days the vape will last.

Runtime also changes with operating power, puff length, frequency and device efficiency.

A bigger battery can still run down quickly when paired with a much higher-power coil.

Compare battery capacity and normal operating power together.

Prefilled vs Refillable

A refillable vape lets you add compatible e-liquid yourself.

A prefilled device can still be rechargeable. Charging the battery does not mean you can refill the liquid chamber.

The NOVA 4in1 is published with four prefilled 10mL chambers, a 650mAh rechargeable battery and a 1.0Ω mesh coil.

Product capacity and nicotine configurations can differ by destination market. For EU purchases, check the exact SKU and market configuration before ordering.

Choose refillable if you want control over e-liquid and consumables. Choose prefilled if you prefer fewer setup steps.

Do Not Copy Nicotine Strength Between Devices

Nicotine concentration is only one part of nicotine exposure.

Device output, aerosol production, puff length, puff frequency and inhalation behavior also affect how much nicotine a person receives.

A nicotine strength used in a low-output MTL device should not automatically be carried over to a higher-output DTL setup.

For adults using vaping to stop smoking, the NHS advises choosing enough nicotine to manage cravings and says the full benefit comes from stopping cigarettes completely.[2]

A legal nicotine limit is not a recommended personal dose.

Liquid Use, Running Cost and Coil Changes

Higher-output coils generally vaporize more e-liquid per puff. That means more refilling and usually more liquid cost.

There is no reliable rule such as “DTL uses X mL per day.” Power, airflow, coil, puff length and frequency all change consumption.

Use your own numbers:

30-day liquid use = average daily liquid use × 30.

If you use a refillable device, track how many milliliters you actually use over several days. That gives you a better monthly estimate than a puff-count claim.

Running cost can include:

  • e-liquid;
  • replacement pods;
  • replacement coils;
  • tank parts or seals on some devices;
  • replacement batteries on removable-cell devices.

For prefilled systems, compare the price of each replacement unit with how long it actually lasts for your own use.

Do not use maximum puff count as a fixed runtime. Puff duration and individual use change the result.

How Long Does a Coil Last?

There is no reliable rule that every coil lasts seven, ten or fourteen days.

Sweeteners, power, liquid composition, puff frequency and wicking conditions all affect coil life.

Replace a coil or pod when you get persistent burnt taste, major flavor loss or abnormal output after confirming that the battery is charged and liquid is present.

System What you usually replace
Built-in-coil pod Whole cartridge
Replaceable-coil pod Internal coil
Tank-based vape pen Coil, and sometimes glass or seals
DTL tank Higher-output coil
Prefilled rechargeable device Prefilled unit or cartridge

Built-In or Removable Battery?

Built-in batteries keep things simple. You do not have to buy, carry or manage loose cells.

Some larger vape devices use removable lithium-ion batteries. Those cells need correct handling.

FDA says vape battery fires and explosions appear uncommon but can cause serious injury. It advises using batteries recommended for the device, keeping loose cells away from metal objects, charging on a clean flat surface and avoiding extreme temperatures.[3]

If you do not want to handle separate cells, choose a regulated device with a built-in battery.

If You Are Switching From Cigarettes

If you smoke, complete replacement matters more than cloud size.

FDA says adults who smoke may reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals if they switch completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Long-term dual use can retain substantial health risks.[4]

A Cochrane review included 80 studies involving 29,861 adults who smoked. About 8 to 10 in every 100 people using nicotine e-cigarettes stopped smoking for at least six months, compared with about 6 in every 100 using nicotine-replacement therapy. Cochrane rated the evidence for improved quit rates versus nicotine-replacement therapy as high certainty.[5]

In the United States, no e-cigarette is FDA-approved as a smoking-cessation medication.[6]

Check the Market Version

A product sold in one country may need a different configuration in another.

Under the EU Tobacco Products Directive, nicotine-containing refill containers may not exceed 10mL. Nicotine-containing disposable e-cigarettes and single-use cartridges or tanks may not exceed 2mL. Nicotine-containing liquid may not exceed 20mg/mL.[7]

These are legal limits, not recommended nicotine doses.

For EU orders, check the exact SKU, packaging, nicotine configuration and destination-country requirements before buying.

Common Buying Mistakes

Treating DTL as an upgrade: if you prefer a tight draw, moving to DTL solves nothing. You just get a different inhale and usually more vapor.

Ignoring replacement pods: a reusable device is not much use if you cannot find its compatible cartridge or coil.

Assuming rechargeable means refillable: a device can recharge its battery while keeping a sealed prefilled liquid chamber.

Trusting puff count as fixed runtime: puff figures depend on test conditions and puff duration. They do not tell you exactly how many days a device will last.

Copying another person’s nicotine strength: their liquid strength is not a specification for your device or your nicotine use.

Check These 10 Things Before Buying

  1. Draw: MTL, RDL or DTL?
  2. Liquid system: refillable or prefilled?
  3. Coil: which exact pod or coil fits?
  4. Power: what range does that coil require?
  5. Airflow: fixed or adjustable?
  6. Battery: built-in or removable, and what capacity?
  7. Consumables: can you easily buy replacement pods or coils?
  8. Maintenance: are you happy to refill, clean and replace coils?
  9. Nicotine: is the strength suitable for the device and your use?
  10. Market: is the exact SKU suitable for the country where it will be sold or used?

If a product page cannot answer these questions, get the specification before ordering.

Which Vape Should You Buy?

Choose a pod if you want a compact device, simple controls and easy cartridge changes.

Choose a vape pen if you like a slim cylindrical shape. Check the coil and airflow because “pen” does not tell you how the device inhales.

Choose an RDL pod if MTL feels too tight but a full DTL draw feels excessive.

Choose a DTL device if you specifically want open airflow and higher vapor output.

After that, compare coil, power, airflow, battery, liquid system and replacement parts. Those are the specs that change daily use.

FAQ

Is a pod better than a vape pen?

No. A pod is usually cartridge-based. A vape pen describes the shape of the device. Compare draw, coil, airflow and battery instead.

Which vape is easiest to use?

A draw-activated pod or prefilled rechargeable device usually has fewer controls than an adjustable DTL setup. A refillable system gives you more control but also adds filling and coil or pod replacement.

Can a pod be DTL?

Yes. “Pod” describes the cartridge system, not the inhale. A pod with the right coil and enough airflow can support RDL or DTL.

Does lower resistance always mean more vapor?

No. Resistance works with coil design, airflow and power. The resistance number alone does not tell you how much vapor a device will produce.

Does a larger battery always last longer?

No. A higher-power device can drain a larger battery faster. Compare battery capacity with the coil’s normal operating power.

Is rechargeable the same as refillable?

No. A vape can have a rechargeable battery and a sealed prefilled liquid chamber.

Should I choose the highest puff count?

No. Puff count is a manufacturer performance claim, not a fixed runtime. Compare battery, liquid capacity, draw and replacement system first.

Should a smoker choose MTL or DTL?

MTL has a tighter draw that may feel more familiar to some smokers. If vaping is being used to stop smoking, nicotine strength and complete replacement of cigarettes matter more than vapor output. NHS guidance says users should choose enough nicotine to manage cravings and stop cigarettes completely to get the full benefit of switching.[8]

Is vaping safe?

No. CDC says e-cigarette aerosol can contain nicotine, cancer-causing chemicals, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds and fine particles. Aerosol generally contains fewer harmful chemicals than cigarette smoke, but that does not make vaping safe.[9]
