How Can I Tell If a Vape Is Genuine or Counterfeit

Author: Marsilen October 9, 2026 ~ 10 min read
Start with the manufacturer’s verification system. Then match the exact model, flavor, nicotine strength, batch details and device specifications. A box can look right and still be fake. Logos, barcodes and QR codes can all be copied.If the security code fails, the model details do not match and the seller cannot explain where the product came from, stop using it until the manufacturer checks it.

Check the Authentication Code First

Look for a scratch code, serial number, unique QR code, NFC tag or other security identifier used by the brand.

Do not trust a QR code just because it is printed on the box. Open the manufacturer’s official website yourself, find its verification page and enter the code there.

  1. Open the official manufacturer website.
  2. Find the product verification or authentication page.
  3. Enter the code manually when possible.
  4. Check whether the result matches the model in your hand.
Verification result What to do
Code is valid and matches the model Continue with the batch, packaging and device checks.
Code does not exist Contact the manufacturer before using the vape.
Code belongs to another model Treat the product as suspicious.
Code shows previous checks Ask whether you or the seller already checked it.
Code shows repeated unexpected checks Send the code to the manufacturer for review.

Scan-count rules vary by brand. A previous scan is not automatic proof of a fake.

Make Sure the Exact Product Exists

Search the full combination printed on the package: brand + model + flavor + nicotine strength + configuration.

Match the details that are hard to explain away:

  • model name;
  • flavor or flavor combination;
  • nicotine strength;
  • battery specification;
  • coil type or resistance when published;
  • charging port;
  • screen or indicator layout;
  • mouthpiece and selector design;
  • package contents.

For example, the current Marsilen NOVA 4in1 listing shows four selectable flavor positions, a 650mAh rechargeable battery, a 1.0Ω mesh coil and Type-C charging. The NOVA 3in1 uses three selectable flavor positions, an 850mAh rechargeable battery, a 1.0Ω coil and Type-C charging. If a package uses one model name but carries another model’s hardware details, verify the SKU with Marsilen.

A missing product page does not prove a fake. The model may be discontinued or sold only in another market. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the exact SKU.

Checking a Marsilen device?

Send the model name, package photos, nicotine strength and any batch or security code. Those details are more useful than a photo of the front of the box alone.

Check the Nicotine Label

First check whether the numbers agree with each other.

If a label explicitly uses nicotine concentration as % w/v, the conversion is:

  • 1% w/v = 10 mg/mL
  • 2% w/v = 20 mg/mL
  • 3% w/v = 30 mg/mL
  • 5% w/v = 50 mg/mL

Do not make an exact conversion when the package does not state how the percentage is defined. If one part of the package says 20 mg/mL and another clearly claims a different concentration for the same liquid, ask the manufacturer which label is correct.

Check Whether the Product Fits the Market

For nicotine-containing e-cigarettes covered by the EU Tobacco Products Directive, nicotine liquid placed on the market must not exceed 20 mg/mL. Dedicated refill containers must not exceed 10 mL, and cartridges or tanks in disposable e-cigarettes or single-use cartridges must not exceed 2 mL.[1]

So if a product is sold as an EU-market nicotine vape, check its nicotine strength and liquid configuration against the rules that apply in the destination country. A genuine device made for another market is not automatically legal for sale in the EU.

Packaging can also change by country. Warning text, language, importer details, nicotine strength and available options may differ. Compare the vape with the correct market version, not the first photo you find online.

For Marsilen products, the current product range is the right place to start checking published specifications. If a product page shows more than one strength or configuration, confirm which version is actually available for your market rather than assuming every option is sold everywhere.

Genuine and Authorized Are Different Questions

Genuine asks whether the claimed manufacturer made the product. Authorized asks whether that exact product may legally be sold in a particular market.

As of September 2026, FDA lists 48 FDA-authorized e-cigarette products that may lawfully be sold in the United States.[2]

A vape missing from that list is not automatically counterfeit. It may be a real product without U.S. marketing authorization. FDA also states that marketing authorization does not mean an e-cigarette is safe or “FDA approved.”[3]

If a seller advertises a vape as “FDA approved,” check the FDA list instead of trusting the phrase.

Check the Batch and Serial Details

Look at every identifier on the device and box:

  • serial number;
  • batch or lot number;
  • production code;
  • manufacturing date when provided;
  • security number;
  • manufacturer or importer details.

Check further if the device and box show conflicting identifiers, the code belongs to another model, a batch label looks altered, or several supposedly unique units carry the same identifier.

Serial-number formats vary by brand. Compare the product with the same manufacturer and model, not with an unrelated vape.

Use the Packaging to Find Contradictions

What to check What can be suspicious
Model name Misspelling or a model name the manufacturer cannot confirm
Flavor A flavor or combination not listed for that model
Nicotine label Numbers that conflict on the same package
Security code Missing, invalid or linked to another product
Batch information Altered, missing or inconsistent identifiers
Market information Wrong language, warnings or importer details for the claimed market
Product artwork Wrong mouthpiece, screen, selector or charging port

A different font or box color is weak evidence. A security code linked to another model is not.

A working retail barcode also proves very little. Barcodes can be copied. A manufacturer-verified unique code is much stronger evidence than a barcode that simply scans.

Product package, blank receipt and seller records

Check the Seller and Keep the Receipt

Keep the seller name, receipt or order confirmation, purchase date and original listing until the product is verified.

A traceable order gives the manufacturer something concrete to check. It also shows what the seller claimed you were buying.

Price can raise a red flag, but there is no honest rule such as “30% cheaper means fake.” Compare the same SKU and market version across established sellers. Promotions, old stock and wholesale pricing can all lower a legitimate price.

Vape device details examined with a magnifying glass

Compare the Device With the Official Model

Take the vape out of the box and compare it with the manufacturer’s current product page.

Check:

  • mouthpiece shape;
  • charging-port type and position;
  • screen or indicator layout;
  • buttons or flavor selectors;
  • airflow openings;
  • logo placement;
  • pod or cartridge connection;
  • published dimensions and weight, when available.

Small cosmetic differences can happen between batches. A different charging port, selector layout or body design is harder to dismiss.

Also check the build. Loose mouthpieces, damaged ports, large uneven seams, rattling parts or heavy leakage may point to a defective product. They do not prove a counterfeit on their own.

Do Not Use Puff Count or Taste as Proof

Puff count is a specification check, not an authentication system.

The current NOVA 4in1 page lists up to 80,000 puffs, while the NOVA 3in1 page lists up to 60,000. If a package carrying the same model name shows a materially different figure, confirm the SKU. “Up to” does not mean every user will reach that number.

Taste is even weaker evidence. Storage, coil condition, airflow, battery level and liquid degradation can all change flavor.

If the product has an abnormal smell or taste, severe leakage, overheating or another fault, stop using it. FDA accepts reports about e-cigarette problems including overheating, ignition, explosion, leaking e-liquid chambers, damaged products and abnormal appearance, smell or taste.[4]

Leaking, overheating or physically damaged?

Stop using the device. Keep the box and order details, then photograph the problem before returning or disposing of anything.

What to Send the Manufacturer

Do not send only “Is this fake?” Give the manufacturer enough information to identify the product.

  1. exact model name;
  2. flavor or flavor combination;
  3. nicotine strength shown on the package;
  4. security or authentication code;
  5. serial, batch or lot number;
  6. purchase date;
  7. seller name;
  8. clear photos of the device and every side of the box.

For a Marsilen order, keep the order number and checkout email ready as well. The Marsilen Help Center covers device, shipping and order issues, while the contact page is the direct route for product-specific questions.

Buying for a Vape Shop or Distributor?

Wholesale buyers should check the exact SKU, strength, batch and destination-market version before ordering volume. A series name is not enough.

Marsilen’s wholesale page asks business buyers to provide the destination, product, expected quantity and sales channel so the current configuration and batch-specific information can be checked before a larger order.

Need help checking a device you already have?

Keep the model name, batch or security code, package photos and seller record together. Review the contact checklist so support has enough information to identify the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my vape is real?

Check the manufacturer’s authentication code first. Then match the exact model, nicotine strength, batch details and device specifications.

Can a counterfeit vape have a QR code?

Yes. A QR code can be copied or point to a fake site. Open the manufacturer’s official website yourself before checking the code.

Does a valid barcode mean a vape is genuine?

No. Retail barcodes can be copied. A manufacturer-verified unique identifier is stronger evidence.

What if the authentication code has already been checked?

Ask whether you or the seller already scanned it. If not, send the code to the manufacturer. Scan-count rules vary by brand.

Is a 5% vape automatically counterfeit?

No. Strength alone cannot prove a fake. FDA’s current U.S. authorization list includes products labeled at 50 mg/mL and 5.0%, while the EU Tobacco Products Directive limits nicotine-containing e-liquid placed on the EU market to 20 mg/mL.[5][6] Check the intended market and the exact way the strength is labeled.

Does different packaging mean the vape is fake?

No. Packaging can vary by batch and market. Check the code and specifications, not just the box design.

Is an unauthorized vape the same as a counterfeit vape?

No. Counterfeit means the product’s claimed identity is false. Unauthorized means it lacks the required marketing status for that market.

Is a genuine vape safe?

No tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is risk-free. CDC states that no tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are safe and that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive.[7]

Bottom Line

Check the manufacturer code first. Then check the exact product specifications, market version and seller record.

Do not use price, taste, puff count, packaging color or a working barcode as standalone proof. If the code fails or the specifications conflict, stop using the vape and send the manufacturer the code, batch details, receipt and photos.
